Previously Painted Metal
Question: I want to paint over metal that has already been painted. Do I have to sand the metal before applying a new coat of spray paint? Do I have to use a primer?
Answer: When working with metal that has already been painted, first remove loose rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or chemical rust remover. Since the metal has previously been painted, lightly sand the surface and remove dust with a tack cloth. Next, prime the surface to protect against rust and corrosion. Outdoor metal should always be primed before painting for greatest durability. After allowing the primer to dry completely, add a fresh coat or two of spray paint.
If you are painting a metal surface that will remain inside, we suggest using Indoor/Outdoor Primer followed by Indoor/Outdoor Paint. If the metal surface will be exposed to the outdoor elements, we recommend using Outdoor Spaces® Rust Converter as a primer, followed by any of Krylon's Outdoor Spaces® paint finishes.
